“Twice. I get two shots at everything. The thing is, I have to live with my second try. There is no going back. Over the years, I have found this the price that I pay for this gift. And the price I have paid in love.”
- Alfie from Mitch Albom’s “Twice”
I recently finished reading “Twice” by Mitch Albom, and it left me thinking about a question I would like to share with all of you: If you were given a second chance in life, would you do anything differently?
In the novel, the main character, “Alfie,” discovers at a very young age that he has a remarkable ability – he can undo moments in his life, and live them a second time. However, every “do over” comes with consequences, and once he has chosen to relive a moment, he must accept whatever follows.
At its heart, “Twice” is a love story. It explores how Alfie’s second chances affect his lifelong relationship with “Gianna,” the woman he has always loved from childhood. While I enjoyed the beauty and emotion of the story, it also caused me to reflect on my own life. If I had the opportunity for a “do over,” what moments would I relive, and how might they have turned out? What “mistakes” would I have tried to change?
Like many people, there are certainly decisions I wish I had handled differently. But in thinking about that, I have always believed that the person we are today has been shaped by all of our life experience – both the good and the bad. Our mistakes teach us valuable lessons, and in my own case, I know I am a better today because of the challenges, setbacks, and errors I have experienced along the way.
When I finished reading the book, I realized that we learn from our successes and our disappointments. The important thing is learning to live with our mistakes, live fully, appreciate the journey, and grow from every outcome our decisions create.
So, I leave you once again with this question: if you were given the opportunity to change something in your life, would you?” And perhaps more importantly, how have your mistakes helped shape the person you are today? Take a moment and give that some thought.
